Resorts World Genting's inaugural Genting Sustainbiz expo, taking place on 10 – 12 September at the Genting International Convention Centre, unites leading companies in the food and beverage industry committed to sustainable practices.

This three-day event showcases the leaders in sustainable practices that are pioneering eco-friendly solutions while prioritising biodiversity and responsible practices within the food and beverage sector.

One of these businesses includes Avant Meats, Asia’s first cultivated fish company established in Hong Kong in 2018 by Carrie Chan and Dr Mario Chin. Since Avant Meats’ establishment, they have since expanded their business to Singapore in 2021.

Utilising a patent-pending, cost-effective bioprocess, Avant's proprietary biotechnology platform cultivates animal-free fish protein directly from fish cells, ensuring complete traceability. This innovative technology allows businesses to produce meat and animal proteins without harming animals through traditional farming, catching, or slaughtering.

Avant's cultivated fish surpasses conventional options in terms of nutrition, being entirely GMO-free and free of pollutants. Their product portfolio extends beyond food, venturing into skincare and other functional applications.

Following a successful consumer tasting event held on Sentosa Island at a Genting Ventures-owned restaurant, the company is planning a significant 30-fold expansion in its production capacity to meet global demand for sustainable seafood. Genting Ventures is part of the Malaysian conglomerate Genting Group, an investor in Avant Meats.

Carrie Chan, Co-Founder and CEO, shares, “Most of us are not aware that fish contribute to one of planet's most significant carbon sinks. We might think: Okay, I am only eating one fish; it won't harm the ecosystem - However, billions of people consume a lot of fish over time. When we continuously remove fish from the ocean without allowing them to replenish, overfishing harms marine ecosystems and disrupts the healthy functioning of the ocean's carbon cycle.”

Carrie Chan, recognised by Tatler Asia as one of Hong Kong's Most Influential People in 2022, will be delivering a talk at Genting Sustainbiz addressing ‘The Promise of Cultivated Seafood’.
