The art of lion dance blends martial arts, acrobatics, and storytelling and symbolises strength, prosperity, and good fortune. During festive occasions such as Chinese New Year, it is believed to help the driving away of evil spirits. Resorts World Genting is no stranger to hosting lion dance events, playing host to the 20th Malaysia National Lion Dance Championship 2024 last year, a tradition which started way back in 1994. This year from 25 to 27 July, the 15th Genting World Lion Dance Championship will be held at the Arena of Stars.
The championship, one of the world’s most prestigious lion dance tournaments is organised by Resorts World Genting, with the Federation of Selangor & Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association as the consultant. 40 elite teams from across the globe, including powerhouses from China, Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Canada, Hong Kong and Malaysia, and more will compete fiercely against each other with breathtaking stunts.
This year, for Genting’s 60th anniversary, the prize pool has substantially increased, with a whopping total of USD 48,600 (approximately RM212.7k). For the first time in the championship’s history, the Champion will receive a grand prize of USD 18,000, their team’s name engraved on the coveted perpetual trophy, as well as individual trophies and medals. The First Runner-Up will take home USD 10,000, and the Second Runner-Up will receive USD 6,000, both accompanied by trophies and medals.
Additionally, seven teams will receive Excellence Awards worth USD 1,800 each. 2025 will see the introduction of the “Best Difficulty Award” which will spotlight the team that executes the most daring and intricate stunts. The winning team will be honoured with a USD 2,000 cash prize and a special trophy recognizing their technical mastery and creative innovation.
Sandra Lim, Miss Universe Malaysia 2024 and Top 30 Finalist at Miss Universe 2024 will make a special appearance and perform for audiences at the Final of 15th Genting World Lion Dance Championship. As a martial artist and passionate enthusiast, Sandra promises a performance that is sure to captivate the audience.
