What Is the 2026 Domestic Travel Tax Relief?

The Malaysian Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) has reintroduced and expanded a special tax relief to encourage domestic tourism. Separate from the Lifestyle Tax Relief (books, etc.) this incentive allows eligible Malaysian tax residents to claim qualifying tourism expenses incurred within Malaysia.  

Amount: Up to RM1,000 per year of assessment.

Tips for Making a Successful Claim

To ensure a smooth tax filing process, keep these tips in mind: 

1. Keep your receipts. Save all invoices and digital receipts, as LHDN requires supporting documents to be retained for up to seven years. Make sure these aren’t booking confirmations. 
2. Go digital if possible. Ink can fade for receipts, so photograph them immediately. 
3. Book under the claimant's name. If you're travelling as a family, consider making the booking under the person who will be claiming the tax relief, subject to LHDN's eligibility requirements. 
4. Pay using a card or e-wallet. This creates a traceable record that can back up your receipt.
