Distinctive Features & Why Are They Unique In Genting Highlands?

"Endemic species: Dacrydium comosum.
It is Endemic to Peninsular Malaysia, specifically in the Genting Highlands, and is listed as an Endangered Species.

WHY?

  1. Their dispersed seeds are growing in open areas that are kept up with regular grass cutting.
  2. Trespassers' indiscriminate hiking activities, such as trail cutting and route widening.
  3. Land clearance for future development is threatening natural habitats.

The conservation and preservation of Dacrydium comosum species represent our collective and widespread effort to protect and conserve the important Flora of Genting Highlands and their natural habitat, thereby ensuring species continuity. We accomplish this by establishing forest safe zones known as BIO Parks and making them accessible to the public under guidance.

Conservation Efforts

  1. Rescue threatened plants from areas impacted by land development and relocate them to safe and secure areas on our property.
  2. Establish salvaged plant holding areas that also serve as education and information centres.

Sustainability Efforts

  1. Gazette virgin mossy forest as safe zones for the preservation of Dacrydium comosum species.
  2. Ensure adequate protection of the sites from public and unauthorised entry.
  3. Monitor and regulate entry to protected sites.
  4. Regulate university plant sample collection in order to prevent over-collection of endemic and endangered species.
